Darlene P. (Smith) Mccauley

January 4, 1945 — September 28, 2015

HOLDEN - Darlene P. (Smith) McCauley, 70, of Holden, passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family on Monday, September 28, 2015 after a brief illness. Born in Westminster and raised in Rutland, Darlene was the daughter of Forrest and Martenah (Prescott) Smith.

Darlene attended school in Rutland and graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1963. That same year, she married Roger “Skip” D. McCauley of Holden, and together they raised their four children. She enjoyed everything about being a mom and grandmother, and loved to have her family around her.

Darlene was a gifted artist. Using acrylics, she transferred the beauty and joy in her heart to any surface, whether canvas, wood, or the walls of local homes. Painting for Darlene was more than just a hobby; she exhibited and offered for sale her limited edition prints and one-of-a-kind pieces throughout New England and beyond. She particularly enjoyed adding florals or country village scenes to custom furniture built by her adoring husband, Skip. They both owned and operated D & S Country Gifts in Clinton, where they spent many hours together.

She leaves her devoted husband of 52 years, Skip D. McCauley; three daughters, Kim D. Longe of Brookfield, Tammy J. McCauley-Masse and her husband, David of Kittery, Maine and Candace L. Graham and her husband, Richard of Holden; a son, William R. McCauley and his wife, Isabel of Holden; nine grandchildren, Brendan and Ryan Longe, Charlotte Masse, Eli, Daniel and Elly Graham, and Nathan, Lucas and Jack McCauley; nephews and nieces. Besides her parents, Darlene is predeceased by her brother, Robert Smith.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Darlene’s family from 5 to 8 pm on Monday, October 5, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service honoring her life will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, October 6, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Grove Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, P.O. Box 5014, Hargerstown, MD 21741-5014.
