SHREWSBURY/CHELMSFORD - Daniel R. O'Neil, 80, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 27, 2018 with his loving wife by his side. Born and raised in Taunton, Dan was the son of the late Daniel and Rita (Bird) O'Neil and lived 45 years in Chelmsford before moving in 2014 to the Willows in Worcester and then to Southgate in Shrewsbury in September 2018.
Dan graduated from Taunton High School and received both his bachelor and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Northeastern University. On September 14, 1963, Dan married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Dion, and lived briefly in Waltham before moving to Chelmsford where they raised their three children. He was an electrical engineer for 37 years at MITRE Corporation retiring in 2000.
He was a member of St. John’s The Evangelist Church in Chelmsford and a former president of The Association for Retarded Citizens of Greater Lowell. He enjoyed gardening, birding, puttering around the house and following New England sport teams. Dan traveled extensively for work and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family. One of his favorite outdoor activities was playing golf with his sons. Dan was selfless by nature and will be remembered as a quiet and observant gentleman.
He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carolyn F. (Dion) O'Neil; two sons, Kevin M. O'Neil and his wife Audrey of Rye Brook, New York and Stephen D. O'Neil and his wife Ashley of Worcester; a daughter, Kathleen M. O'Neil of Worcester; two sisters, Audrey Mello of Taunton and Donna Wood of Middleboro; four grandchildren, Kyle, Daniel, Aidan and Finn O'Neil; nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, Dan is predeceased by a brother, Robert O' Neil.
Relatives and friends are invited to honor Dan’s life by attending a Celebration of Life at 2 pm on Sunday, December 30, at the chapel in Southgate at Shrewsbury, 30 Julio Dr. Please wear your favorite New England Sports team attire to celebrate Dan.
