WORCESTER – Daisy (Melhuish) Benedict, 92, of 70 Briarwood Circle died Friday, September 24, 2004, in Umass Memorial Medical Center.
Her husband of 63 years, Dr. Karl T. Benedict, Sr., died in 2000. She leaves three sons, Dr. Karl T. Benedict, Jr. and his wife Patricia of Weston, Arthur H. Benedict and his wife Kathleen of Kirkland, Washington, and Robert J. Benedict and his wife Rebecca of Holden; a daughter, Ann B. Katz and her husband Norman of Metairie, Louisiana; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Enfield, England, daughter of Arthur W. and Sarah Ann (Westlake) Melhuish, and lived 31 years in West Boylston and 24 years in Holden.
Mrs. Benedict was a Registered Nurse and a trained anesthetist and worked at Memorial Hospital in Worcester and Holden District Hospital in Holden. She graduated from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1933. She was a member and a former youth choir director at the First Congregational Church of West Boylston. She was a member of the West Boylston Historical Society, Women’s Club of West Boylston, Holden Historical Society and the Garden Club of Holden. She was a founding member of the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Foundation.
A memorial service for Mrs. Benedict will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 29, in the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, 26 Central Street, West Boylston. There are no calling hours. Burial will be private in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, 32 Church Street, West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, 26 Central Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
