S Dorothy 'Daba' Porter

HOLDEN - Dorothy "Daba" L. (Cattermole) Porter, 86, of Holden, died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at her daughter's home in North Reading. She was born in Newton on March 1, 1921, the daughter of the late Lester G. and Ethel L. (Stringham) Cattermole.

She leaves three daughters, Pamela S. Cardaci, Patricia P. Ray and her husband The Rev. George D. Ray of North Reading and Susan P. Gelles and her husband Howard of Holden; her sister, Ardith Martin and her husband Robert of Holden; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Daba was the former Director of Financial Aid at Worcester State College. For many years with her daughter, Pam, she owned a ceramic design studio, Designs by Daba. Many of her creations were shown in local stores for various holiday displays, and she and some of her students were also juried winners of many Massachusetts Ceramic League competitions. She was an avid crafter, working her creativity in many different mediums and styles of oil painting, needlework, knitting, crocheting and sewing. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of West Boylston and was an active member of women’s Bible studies at Holden Chapel, Heritage Bible Chapel and St. Francis Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron, Cradle Rock Chapter 125 and American Legion Post 204. She had been a resident of Holden for the past 34 years.

A memorial service for Daba will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 12th, in the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, 26 Central Street. Interment will be private in Wildwood Cemetery, Gardner. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 11th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dorothy's memory to the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, 26 Central Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
