John C. Smith

RUTLAND – John C. Smith, 81, of Fairview Avenue and formerly of Worcester, died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday, May 29, 2007.

He is survived by his sister, Florence Barry and her husband Walter of New York; two nephews, John Barry and his family of New York, and Robert Barry and his family of Vermont. He was born on August 14, 1925 in Waterbury, CT, the son of the late Charles A. and Sally (Kemes) Smith. After graduating from Commerce High School in Worcester, he served in Company C with the Mortar Battalion of the U.S. Army during World War II in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre, and was stationed in France and Austria.
Mr. Smith worked as a toolmaker for the former Telechron, Inc., a division of GE and later Timex, before retiring in 1988. He was a member of many organizations including the Lions Club in Rutland and a volunteer for the Boy Scouts at Treasure Valley.

He was an Amateur “Ham” Radio Operator; his call sign was “K1VNT” and enjoyed volunteering his radio and time during the Boston Marathon. He served on the Rutland Council on Aging Board and worked as a volunteer driver for the Meals on Wheels program. He participated in the development of the Wachusett Greenway’s Rail Trail into Rutland.

The funeral for Mr. Smith will be held on Monday, June 4th, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 3rd, in the funeral home.
