AUBURN, MA / YORBA LINDA, CA - Kaaren Comer Powell, 65, of Yorba Linda, CA, passed away at her home in Yorba Linda, CA on June 11, 2011 after a courageous two year battle with cancer.
Kaaren was born on November 23, 1945 in Bridgeport, CT, the daughter of the late James E. and Gladys (Hook) Comer. Kaaren leaves her husband, Larry M. Powell of Yorba Linda, CA; her brother, James E. Comer and his wife Cheryl of Princeton; a niece, Lauren Comer Kantor of Swampscott and her children Jakob, Caroline and Annalise; and a cousin, Wesley N. Hook and his wife Sandra of Bethany, CT. She was predeceased by her aunt, Olive H. Hook in 2001 and her nephew, Patrick J. Comer in 2008.
She grew up in Auburn and attended Auburn schools, graduating from Auburn High School in 1963. She was a Rainbow Girl and a band majorette. She attended Worcester Jr. College and worked in hotel management in NH and MA before relocating to CA in the late 1960's. Kaaren began a 40 year career working in commercial real estate, property management and land development in Southern Cal. and Nevada. She started her career at Stater Brothers Super Markets and also held management positions with Arden Mayfair Markets, Watson Commercial Real Estate and The Irvine Company. Most recently with her husband, Larry, they started their own development company, LMPowell Development Company, where she was VP and Secretary.
Kaaren held several advanced certificates in commercial real estate, development and property management. She was an accomplished and well respected professional to all who worked with her. Kaaren was a loving, gentle, giving wife, sister, cousin and aunt, and will be greatly missed by her family, friends and colleagues alike.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, CA, on July 15, 2011 at 2:30 PM. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Patrick Comer Courage Foundation at
