STERLING – Hervey C. Nichols, 89, of 36 Redstone Hill Road, died Friday, May 18, 2007 in the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility, Leominster, after an illness.
His wife of 52 years, Doris (Gallagher) Nichols, died on February 5, 1993. He leaves a daughter, Deborah Ann Rubak, son-in-law Jeffrey Rubak and his “Big Boy” grandson, Eric Rubak, all of Foothill Ranch, California; two brother-in-laws, Kenneth and Norman Gallagher, both of Leominster; several nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of Frederick and Agnes (Belanger) Nichols, and lived in Sterling most of his life. He was a graduate of South High School in Worcester.
Mr. Nichols was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the 68th Coast Artillery Anti Aircraft Division, European African Middle Eastern theatre. He was wounded in action in Ansio, Italy and was awarded the purple heart and three battle stars earned in Africa, Sicily and Italy. For 23 years, he worked for Empire Furniture in Clinton, retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Richard of Chichester Church and enjoyed watching baseball and playing with his grandson.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 21st, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral for Mr. Nichols will be held on Tuesday from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. Memorial donations may be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Department., Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564.
