PRINCETON – Clayton I. Rice, 81, of 272 Mountain Road, a life long resident of Princeton, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005, in UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Frances (Gauvreau) Rice; his children, Dennis C. Rice and his wife Linda of Oakham, Linda Taylor and her husband Edgar of Cape Coral, FL, and Dale Stafford and her husband Keith “Tom” of Princeton; two sisters, Barbara Cummings of Barre and Priscilla Hubbard and her husband Clayton of Princeton; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His daughter, Dawn Rice March died in 1992. His infant grandson, John Rice March, died in 1968. Five sisters and four brothers predeceased him. He was born in Princeton on February 5, 1924, son of Everett E. and Maud (Davis) Rice. He graduated from Princeton High School and attended Worcester Boys Trade.
Mr. Rice was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the 589th Field Artillery Division FBN with the 106th Infantry Division. He served in France, Germany and Belgium engaging in three battles including the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Battle of the Bulge, the Veterans of the 106th Division and the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189 in Sterling. He worked as a welder at the former Hubbard’s Garage in Princeton and at Weyhauser Company in Fitchburg. He was a 3rd class stationary steam engineer at the North Central Correctional Facility in Gardner for the Commonwealth of Mass. He was a volunteer firefighter and Lieutenant for the Princeton Fire Dept. He was a member and former Deacon of the First Congregational Church of Princeton, the church’s Couple’s Club and a former member of the Princeton Planning Board. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
The funeral for Mr. Rice will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 2, in the First Congregational Church of Princeton, 14 Mountain Road. Burial will follow at 1 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden.
