Chong Yon (Kim) Kwasniewski

January 29, 1939 — February 26, 2014

WEBSTER - Chong Yon (Kim) Kwasniewski passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 26, 2014. Born in South Korea in 1939, she grew up in and survived the deprivations of war and strife in South Korea at that time.

Her family consisted of six brothers and two sisters in the Taegu City and Pusan areas of South Korea. There is a large extended family still in those areas including a younger sister. She is survived by her sons, Allen W. Kwasniewski and his wife, Frances and John J. Kwasniewski; her beloved granddaughter, Danielle; and her little angel and best friend, Sasha, the Shih Tzu.

Working as a seamstress, she met her future husband, Francis Kwasniewski while he served in the US Air Force in South Korea. Together, they married in 1966 and moved to Francis’s hometown of Webster when he retired from the Air Force.

Renowned for her cooking, she combined her skill with Korean dishes with new recipes for golumpkis and other Polish dishes. A determined hard worker, Chong Yon found employment at local companies such as Anglo Fabrics and Steven’s Linen, from which she retired. She instilled her strong work ethic in her children and proudly supported both of them to graduate from college.

She was an original member of the Worcester Korean United Methodist Church and found great comfort and peace with her faith and greatly enjoyed the company of fellow church members. Known as hal-muh-nee, or grandmother in Korean, she was always ready to offer advice, assistance or gifts to the small children. Her 32 years of devotion and long service to the church enabled her to raise to the rank of Gwonsa-nim, or Lay Exhorter.

As were her wishes, there will be no calling hours and the funeral will be private. A celebration of life service will be scheduled at a later time. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden is assisting the family with arrangements. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Worcester Korean United Methodist Church, 114 Main St., Worcester MA 01608.
