HOLDEN – Charles F. Hugo, 77, of 49 Highland St., died peacefully on Sunday, May 22, 2005 in St. Vincent’s Hospital Worcester.
He leaves his wife of 45 years, Louise C. (Lacillade) Hugo; his son, Christopher C. Hugo of Holden; his daughter, Lisa L. Hugo of Rutland; a sister, Marguerite R. Belanger of Worcester; a niece, Andrea Morris of Hadley, and several cousins. A sister, Jean M. Kemp, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of Karl and Mary (Townsend) Hugo, and lived 43 years in Holden. He graduated from South High School in Worcester and from Harvard College in Cambridge.
Mr. Hugo was President of the Employers’ Association of Western Massachusetts for over 20 years, retiring in 1993. In addition, he was admitted to the Panel of Arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association. Previously, he was Vice President of the Washburn Company in Worcester where he worked for 17 years. He was a member of the Worcester Harvard Club, the 424th Field Artillery Association, the John E. Harkin’s American Legion Post, the Hudson Hoagland Society of Worcester, and the National Audubon Society. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Worcester YMCA’s Camp Morgan in Washington, New Hampshire.
Mr. Hugo was an active supporter of the Holden Police Department, and numerous town organizations and events. He and his wife received Holden’s Good Neighbor Award in 2002. He was Treasurer of the Friends of Holden Hospital, and was instrumental in the establishment of the Wachusett Fund, which funds emergency services in area towns. He was a founding member of the Holden Center Neighborhood Association, and served on Holden’s Water and Sewer Advisory Board. Mr. Hugo was an avid gardener and sports fan, being a long-time season ticket holder of the Worcester Ice Cats. He was an Army Veteran, and served in combat during the Korean War.
The funeral service for Mr. Hugo will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26, in St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland Street (Rte. 31), Holden. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street (Rte. 122A) Holden. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden.
