Charles 'Slug' Elwin Locke

STERLING/LANCASTER – Charles “Slug” Elwin Locke, Sr., 83, formerly of Sterling, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2012 surrounded by his family after an illness. His first wife of 53 years, Sylvia R. (Collins) Locke, passed away in 2002. His second wife of 6 years, Corinne A. (Stedman) Locke, passed away on March 16, 2012.

He is survived by four daughters, Jeanne L. Plouffe of Sterling, Melodie A. Towne of Orange, Julie K. Toomey of Holden and Melissa R. Horgan and her husband Patrick of North Brookfield; two sons, Frank O. Locke and his wife Bonnie of Ashaway, RI and Charles E. Locke, Jr. and his wife Catherine of Sterling; three step daughters, Deborah J. Kifer and her husband Kenneth and Cheryl J. Young, all of Fitchburg and Sandra G. Grady and her husband Patrick of Leominster; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. A son, Stephen C. Locke, two brothers, Wilburt “Bill” Locke and Chester L. Locke and a sister, Jessie Nuss, predeceased him.

“Slug” was born in Rutland, the son of William and Mary (Murdoch) Locke and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1946. He had lived in Sterling for 46 years before moving back to Lancaster in 2005. He served in the Army National Guard during the Korean Conflict and was a master bookbinder at Murray Printing in Westford, retiring in 1993. Previously he was a master bookbinder and a foreman for over 25 years at the former Colonial Press Company in Clinton. He was a long time member and a Deacon of the Evangelical Congregational Church in Lancaster. Known for great singing ability, Slug sang in the church choir and many local events in the area. He even sang on the TV show “Community Auditions”. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball, bowling and playing golf. Slug always had a large vegetable garden and loved to grow pumpkins for his grandkids every year.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. Funeral services for Slug will be held on Thursday, March 29, at 11 a.m. in the Evangelical Congregational Church, 793 Main Street, Lancaster. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in Sterling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical Congregational Church, Deacon’s Fund, P.O. Box 413, Lancaster, MA 01523.
