Charles 'Charlie' E. Keith

August 18, 1927 — December 14, 2014

HOLDEN – Charles E. Keith, 87, of Holden, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Saint Vincent Hospital after an illness. Born in Worcester and raised in West Boylston, Charlie was the son of Morris B. and Iva (Pratt) Keith and lived in Worcester before moving to Holden in 1953.

Charlie is a 1945 graduate of Commerce High School in Worcester. While in high school, he joined the Army Specialized Training Reserve Program and later attended Massachusetts State University and Norwich University Military School in Northfield, Vermont. Charlie honorably served his country with the U.S. Army Constabulary from 1945 to 1947 in the European Theater of Operations. In 1950, Charlie married the love of his life, Virginia T. Patchulis of Worcester and together moved to Holden where they raised their two children. In 1948, he bought Laurel Hill Dairy, a milk distributorship which he ran in Holden for the following 36 years. After his retirement, Charlie worked part-time at the U.S. Postal Service in Worcester for nearly 20 years.

He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holden, its Worship and Music Committee, and served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Greendale retired Men’s Club. He passionately followed the stock market and was the founding member of the Holden Investment Club which he served as president for many years. Their investment club was a member of the National Association of Investment Clubs and was recognized nationally as the “Top Performing Investment Club” in the country.

After his retirement, Charlie enjoyed spending time with his wife vacationing winter months in Florida and summers on the Cape. Charlie had an engagingly dry sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. He will be remembered for his jokes and story-telling, but most importantly, as a man of great character and integrity.

He leaves his loving wife of 64 years, Virginia T. (Patchulis) Keith; his son, Edward C. Keith of Shirley; his daughter, Susan M. Young of Holden; a step-brother, Richard Dunbar of Ormond Beach, FL; four grandchildren, Ashlee Savoe of Gardner, Misty Keith of Winchendon, Joshua Astles of Virginia and Charles Keith of Winchendon; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A brother, Harold M. Keith predeceased him.
