HOLDEN – Charles E. Hughes, 93, of 316 Reservoir Street, died Thursday, February, 26, 2004, at the Worcester Medical Center.
His wife of 55 years, Marion T. (Griffin) Hughes, died in 1991. He leaves a son, Robert Hughes of Holden; a daughter, Nancy Lockwood of Leicester; a sister, Hazel Arlette of Jupiter, Florida; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a companion Barbara Day of Douglas. Two brothers, Walter and Archibald Hughes, and two sisters, Mildred MaDouse and Eva Hughes, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of John and Emma (Knipe) Hughes.
Mr. Hughes worked as a linotype machinist at the Telegram & Gazette. He also worked for Intertype Corporation of Boston, Merganthaler Line Casting Co. of N.Y. and Sullivan Brothers Printing in Lowell. He was a member of International Typographical Union #165, Rutland Sportsman’s Club, the Green Mountain Club and Vice Commodore of the Oxford U.C.C. canoeing group. He was a former member of the Auburn Sportsman’s Club, Century Sportsman’s Club and the Worcester Rowing Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and skiing and had skied Mt. Wachusett until he was 92 years old.
The Funeral for Mr. Hughes will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 28, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A calling hour will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street, Holden, in the spring.
