Charles H. Burnham

October 10, 1919 — May 2, 2015

HOLDEN -- Charles H. Burnham, 95, of Holden, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at the hospice center in Pinellas Park, Florida. Born and raised in Worcester, Charlie was the son of Arthur and Lillian (MacNeil) Burnham, and lived over 50 years in Holden before retiring to Palm Harbor, Florida in 2003.



His beloved wife of 73 years, Clara O. (Horstman) Burnham, passed away in 2013. He is survived and will be lovingly missed by his son, David A. Burnham and his wife, Theresa of Princeton; a brother, Willard Burnham of Holden; two granddaughters, Kimberly Keefe and her husband, Richard of Kanazawa, Japan and Heather Ericson of Rutland; three grandsons, Jack Carlson and his life partner, Philip of Grafton, Chris Carlson and his wife, Tricia of Rutland, and Eric Carlson and his wife, Dayana of Westminster; six great grandchildren, Brody, Liam, Sophia, and Jake Carlson, Teaghan Keefe and Hailey Ericson; nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by a brother, Lester Burnham and three sisters, Tootie Burnham, Cora Burnham and Helen Johnson.



After attending Worcester schools, Charlie honorably served his country in the United States Army as a Sergeant from 1944 to 1946. Charlie served with the 15th Artillery Observation Battalion in the liberation of Rome which was known as Rome-Arno. He befriended a dog while in Europe, and after several months on a cargo ship, "Gruppo” found his way back to Charlie in the United States.



Prior to and after the war, Charlie worked for Ralph Wagner at Holden Trap Rock. He later worked 30 years at Holden Farmer Supply before joining his son, David as a co-owner of Burnham Maintenance. He was a member of Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester, and Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington.



Charlie was hardworking, industrious, and mechanically minded. He built several homes in his lifetime including his own and his sons. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather and will be remembered for his kindhearted soul.



Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Charlie's family from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. honoring his life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114-2699.
