STERLING – Catherine G. (Quail) McNamara, 87, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 23, 2017, at Clinton Hospital in Clinton. Born and raised in Clinton, Catherine was the daughter of Myles and Blanche (Lavoie) Quail and lived 63 years in Sterling. Her beloved husband of 50 years, William (Bill) F. McNamara died in 2007 She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her son and daughter, William F. McNamara and his wife, Christine of Sterling and Ellen Schultz and her husband, John of Bolton; four sisters, Marjorie Sullivan of Millbury, Blanche Les of Clinton, Theresa Taylor of Arlington, Texas and Elizabeth Bigelow of Hudson; six grandchildren, John, Daniel and his wife, Alison, and Justin Schultz, and William, Bernard and Caitlin McNamara; three great-grandchildren, Louis, Lilly and Callie; nephews and nieces; and her dear friend and caregiver, Rachel Machado, who’s loving care and compassion allowed Catherine to stay at home the last several years . Besides her husband, Bill, Catherine is predeceased by five brothers, Myles, Alfred, Richard, Charles and Michael. Catherine was a graduate of Clinton High School class of 1948. On August 17, 1957, Catherine married the love of her life, Bill McNamara of Sterling. They moved to Sterling and built a new home across the street from his family’s dairy farm on Jewett Road. While raising her two children, she assisted her husband with daily operations and bookkeeping at the farm, along with holding a position as a local operator and later a supervisor at the New England Telephone Co. Catherine also worked over ten years as a dispatcher for the Sterling Police and Fire Departments and seven years for the Princeton Police and Fire Departments. Catherine was first and foremost a woman of great faith and unwavering devotion to her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a devout member of St. Richard of Chichester Church in Sterling and its Women’s Guild. She cherished time spent with her family and was proud of their many accomplishments. When her husband, Bill was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the late 1990’s, Catherine dedicated the following ten years patiently caring for him at their home until his passing in 2007. She enjoyed traveling later in life, knitting mittens and hats for her family, Friday night bingo games and trips to Foxwoods. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Catherine’s family from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, December 28, at Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Friday, December 29, at St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge St., Sterling. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sterling.
