Carolyn Gosse Spodick

February 18, 1935 — March 18, 2014

NORTHBOROUGH/WORCESTER – Carolyn (Gosse) Spodick, 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by love on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 after a brief illness. She was born in Boston, the daughter of Edward L. and Ruth M. (Johnson) Gosse and had lived in Northborough for most of her life.



She leaves her loving husband of 45 years, Dr. David H. Spodick; two sons, Dr. John A. Spodick of Tyngsborough and Stephen A. Spodick and his wife, Kathleen of Holden; two step-daughters, Marjory Blumenthal and her husband, William Blumenthal of Potomac, MD and Nancy Healey and her husband, John Healey of Charlottesville, VA; three grandchildren, Ryan, Christopher and Nicholas Spodick; and two step-grandchildren, Deborah Blumenthal and Michael Healey.



Carolyn graduated from Simmons College in Boston with a B.A. in Chemistry and a Masters in Library Science and then moved to Northern California. Several years later, she returned to her almamater and taught chemistry for over 40 years. She and her husband, David were avid travelers and enjoyed learning of other cultures, language and traditions. They traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, North America and South America. She was on the Northborough School Committee and served as the Chair for several years in the 1980’s. Through the years, she enjoyed being a grandmother, being with friends, theater, the Worcester Art Museum, the Northborough Senior Center & Tower Hill Botanic Garden as well as her cats, stained glass, gardening and genealogy.



In celebration of Carolyn’s life, her family invites you to gather with them for a time of sharing and refreshments anytime between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 23rd at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Drive, Boylston. Please feel free to bring a favorite story in writing about Carolyn that can be shared with others. A private committal service will be held at a later date at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tower Hill Botanic Garden, P.O. Box 598, Boylston, MA 01505-0598 (Attn: Carolyn Spodick Memorial Fund) to fund a memorial bench and garden in her name.
