C. Lorraine (Kersey) Moore

April 10, 1926 — January 6, 2016

Biography

PAXTON – C. Lorraine (Kersey) Moore, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. She was born in Dover, NJ, the daughter of Kenneth and Millie E. (Cooper) Kersey and had lived in Paxton since 1963 before moving to the Briarwood Continuing Care Community in 2014.

She leaves her loving husband of 65 years, Howard W. Moore; her daughter, Melinda Moore of Tacoma, WA; three sons, K. Douglas Moore of Holden, George Moore and his wife, Donna of Sherborn and Stephen Moore and his wife, Beth of Milton, GA; ten grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Jean Kersey.

“Lorrie” graduated with honors from Hood College in Frederick, MD. An extremely gifted writer, after college she entered retail advertising and became copy chief at Hahne & Co. in Newark NJ before commencing her life’s work: her devotion to her husband, family, and community. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Paxton, the Paxton Women’s Club, Friends of the Richards Memorial Library, Heifer International and the Literacy Volunteers of America. Lorrie also spent years of volunteer service with the Adult Learning Center teaching English to immigrants from Vietnam, Afghanistan and other countries, developing close friendships with her students. She worked as a tutor and special needs aid at Wachusett Regional High School and was co-president of the Paxton PTA. She was active for many years in the Wachusett Area Drug Coalition, and served as Youth Leader for both Junior and Senior youth groups at the Paxton Congregational Church. Her life of volunteerism and service will forever be an inspiration to her family, and it is their hope that her life will inspire others to lives of Christian charity.

Lorrie was active outside of her volunteerism as well. Often paired with her husband Howard, she became quite a tennis and platform tennis player, a fact to which a quick perusal of the trophy cases at the Lake Club in New Canaan, CT and Tatnuck Country Club in Worcester, MA will attest. She and her husband shared a love of dance that took them from the dance halls of New York City in the 40’s and 50’s to the dance floors of Massachusetts, where they regularly turned heads well into their 80’s.

Lorrie greeted each day with a smile and a good word. She was a wonderful listener. Her life was forever changed when she suffered a stroke in 2009 but her recovery and subsequent life was marked by courage, dignity, and humor. In 2014 she and her husband Howard left the beloved family home, 92 Richards Ave., Paxton, MA, and moved to Briarwood, where she received and he continues to receive exceptional and compassionate care.

A memorial service for Mrs. Moore will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10, at the First Congregational Church of Paxton, 1 Church Street followed by calling hours at the church’s Fellowship Hall from 3 to 5 p.m. A private committal service will be held at Mooreland Cemetery in Paxton.
