Byron A. Carpenter

OAKHAM/SHREWSBURY – Byron A. Carpenter, Jr., 88, passed away at home on Friday, January 20, 2012, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 61 years, Bernice S. (Judson) Carpenter; three sons, Byron A. Carpenter III and his wife Ellen of Oakham, Warren E. Carpenter and his wife Jayde Garcia of Las Vegas, Nevada and Judson P. Carpenter of Webster; a daughter, Susan E. Getz and her husband William of Portland, Maine; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. Three brothers, Arthur, David and Cedric Carpenter and a sister, Gloria Carlson, predeceased him.
Byron was born in Shrewsbury, the son of Byron A. and Eleanor (Cunningham) Carpenter and had lived most of his life in Shrewsbury before moving to Oakham in 1993. He was an Army Veteran serving with Company C 319th Medical Battalion in the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe Campaigns during World War II. He was a plumber with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 4 in Worcester for sixty years. Byron was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Matthew John Whittall Masonic Lodge and the Stella Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a member of the Lakeview Congregational Church in Worcester. Byron enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid Red Sox fan. He loved his family, animals, long walks and spending time with his friends including those at the Oakham Senior Center.
A funeral service for Byron will be held at the Lake View Congregational Church, 115 Coburn Avenue, Worcester on Wednesday, January 25, at 12 noon, followed by a committal service at South Cemetery, North Brookfield Road, Oakham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mass Wildlife’s Boston Office, Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, 251 Causeway Street, Suite 400, Boston, MA 02114-2152. Please make checks payable to the Commonwealth of Mass-Wildlands Fund. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
