Robert B. Soule

WEST BOYLSTON – Robert B. Soule, Sr., 88, formerly of Goodale Street, died peacefully under the loving care of his family and the staff at Sterling Village on Thursday, June 23, 2011. Bob was born in Worcester, the son Raymond L. and Florence K. (Holmes) Soule and lived his entire life in West Boylston.

Upon graduating from West Boylston High School, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. After returning home, he married Gwendolyn Brown in 1947 and raised their two children in West Boylston. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years in West Boylston retiring as the Assistant Postmaster in 1980. After his retirement, he worked for several years as a caretaker at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in West Boylston.

Bob was a 29 year veteran volunteer firefighter for the town of West Boylston during which time he served as the Deputy Fire Chief for 23 years and also as a member of the Board of Fire Engineers. He was a member and Past Commander of the Harold N. Keith American Legion Post 204 in West Boylston and was a great supporter and fan of their legion baseball team. He was also a member of the West Boylston Historical Society. In 2008, Bob along with his wife Gwen, were selected and honored as the Grand Marshals of West Boylston's 200th Anniversary Parade.

His loving wife of 63 years, Gwendolyn (Brown) Soule, died January 18th. He leaves his son, Robert B. Soule, Jr. and his wife Francine of Jefferson; his daughter, Janet S. Bartlett and her husband James of Sterling; two granddaughters, Amy McCormick and her husband John of West Boylston and Julie Bartlett and her fiancé Daniel Nelson of Amherst; two nephews, Michael and Jeffrey McDaniel; and a brother-in-law, Alvin McDaniel of Florahome, FL. He is predeceased by his sister Margaret McDaniel.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 26th at the Miles Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. A private graveside service with military honors will be in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to West Boylston Historical Society, P.O. Box 201, West Boylston, MA, or the West Boylston Fire Department, Equipment Fund, 39 Worcester Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
