Robert 'Bob' William Spindler

November 20, 1928 — April 17, 2011

RUTLAND – Robert "Bob" William Spindler, Sr., 82, of Glenwood Road, died surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, April 17, 2011 in Saint Vincent Hospital after a short illness.

Bob was born in Worcester, son of William and Alice G. (Thrasher) Spindler, and has lived in Rutland all of his life. He went to Worcester Vocational School and became the area's electrical trouble shooter for machines. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

Bob was a very active member of his community, having been a member of the Rutland Lion's Club for many years (he may have sold you your Christmas tree!); saw-toting member of the Wachusett Greenways, served on the Wachusett Earthday Board and worked on the Rutland 4th of July Parade for many years and one year, was chosen as Grand Marshall. Many years ago, he was a Boy Scouts leader who affected many lives.

He was also a member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons and the First Congregational Church, both in Rutland. Whenever anyone in town needed help with a project, they would call on Bob and he would come through and "do it well". He was also an avid skier, member of the Ski Patrol at Wachusett Mountain and was a ski instructor at the Pine Ridge Ski Area in Barre. Although he put his skis away several years ago, he was an active tennis player and golfer up until the end.

Bob leaves Rosalie I. (Weller) Spindler, his loving wife of 62 years; three children, Diane Spindler, Robert Spindler, Jr. and his wife Anne, all of Rutland, and Nancy Carr and her husband David of Winchendon; five grandchildren, Jeremy Glynn, Heidi Bolduc, Colleen Spindler-Ranta, Sean Ranta and Kerri Spindler-Ranta, as well as a newly arrived great-grandson, Loki Spindler-Ranta.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 23rd, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland followed by a short reception. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Wachusett Greenways, P.O. Box 121, Holden, MA 01520; or to the Rutland Lions Club, P.O. Box 626, Rutland, MA 01543. Burial will be private in Rural Cemetery, Rutland. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
