RUTLAND - Robert L. Bigelow, 72, of 10 Phillips Road, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 14, 2006, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 23 years, Jean E. (Scales) Bigelow; two sons, Eric R. Bigelow, and Bruce E. LaBoffa and his wife Andrea all of Rutland; three daughters, Elisa J. Borowy of Rutland, Pamela K. Banach and her husband Richard of Charlton, and Cindy L. Purcell and her husband Ted of Rutland; a step-daughter, Linda J. Hetu and her husband Robert of Rutland; two sisters, Pauline Spencer of Arlington, and Marjorie MacCallum and her husband James of Rutland; nine grandchildren, Mark and Jodi LaBoffa, Leighton Borowy, Michael Banach, Tanner Purcell, Evelyn and Heath Bigelow, Michael and Jamie Hetu; an aunt, Edna Bigelow of Rutland; an uncle, Ernest Bigelow of Rutland; nieces and nephews. His son, Brian K. LaBoffa, died in June, 2005. He was born in Holden, the son of L. Raymond and Ailleen (Whitney) Bigelow, Jr., and lived all of his life in Rutland.
Bob graduated from Rutland High School and Worcester Junior College. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, and he served as Chief Petty Officer, heavy equipment operator, with the Sea Bees in the Naval Reserves for 32 years. He was owner and operator of R.L. Bigelow Construction Company in Rutland for over 35 years. For 30 years, he was Superintendent and Member of the Board of Rural Cemetery in Rutland, retiring this year. He was a member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons and the American Legion Post 310, both in Rutland.
The funeral service for Bob will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 20, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, Rutland. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 19, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Rutland, P.O. Box 484, Rutland, MA 01543; or Rural Cemetery, In memory of Bob Bigelow, P.O. Box 395, Rutland, MA 01543.
