WORCESTER – Howard Bloom Johnson passed away on April 12, 2010 in Stuart, Florida. He was born on January 28, 1920 in Worcester, son of John H. Johnson and Gertrude E. Bloom.
Howard graduated from Moses Brown Prep School and Brown University, both in Providence, Rhode Island. He served as a U.S. Army glider pilot during World War II and was instrumental in establishing the Glider Pilot Museum in Texas. He attended many reunions throughout Europe with the organization and remained active and proud of his commitment to them up until the time of his death.
He was the owner of Forge and Foundry in New Jersey for 48 years and traveled throughout the Northeast. He was an avid boater and a lifetime member and past commander of the Lackawanna Power Squadron in New Jersey; and a member of the Stuart Power Squadron and Anchor Yacht Club, both in Stuart, Florida. He was especially proud of his 30-foot Cape Dory, which he sailed alone down the inland waterway from Cape Cod to Stuart.
Howard grew up in Worcester and was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He moved to New Jersey after he married Ruth E. Spongberg. They would have celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary the year Ruth passed away in 1999. In 1985, they had retired together to Stuart for the winter months and Brewster, Cape Cod for the summer portion of the year. He is survived by three children: Betty J. Bresler of Chaumont, New York, Charles H. Johnson of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Janice A. Mitchell of Stuart; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and their families.
He will be laid to rest with his parents and wife at a graveside service on Saturday, November 6th, at 10 a.m., in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
