Betty J. (Calkins) Hempel

DENNIS – Betty J. (Calkins) Hampel, 84, died Friday, January 16, 2004, in her home after an illness.
Her husband of 50 years, Dr. Carl H. Hampel, died in 1993. She leaves a daughter, Betty J. Boyer of Dennis and Canyon Lake, California; a son, James P. Hampel of Dennis; a brother, Nelson M. Calkins, Jr. of Rutland; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A sister, Marjory D. Auerbach, predeceased her. She was born in Northampton, the daughter of Nelson M. and Madeline (Dodge) Calkins, and lived many years in Rutland before moving to Dennis in 1972.
Mrs. Hampel graduated from Framingham State Teachers College in 1941 and taught home economics. She was a member of Dennis Union Church, and served on several church committees. She volunteered for 15 years with the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod. She was an avid cook and gardener.
A memorial service for Mrs. Hampel will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2004, in Dennis Union Church, 713 Main Street, Dennis. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 270 Communications Way, Hyannis, MA 02601, or Champ Youth House, 82 School St., Hyannis, MA 02601. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
