Biography
STERLING - Betty I. (Galbraith) Wartman, 97, formerly of Holden and Allentown, PA passed away at home peacefully on Thursday, October 13, while under the loving care of her nephews and nieces. She was born in Philadelphia, PA the daughter of the late Harry and Gladys (Coskey) Galbraith and lived most of her life in Pennsylvania until relocating to Massachusetts to be nearer to her family here.
Betty met her future husband, Ray J. Wartman in 1937 and they wed two years later. Soon, their son, Ray arrived and their little family forged on as the world dealt with the issues of war in Europe. Not long after the United States entry into the war, Ray enlisted with the US Marines and was off to fight. Betty remained with her in-laws and worked nights to support the family, working on the assembly line manufacturing C-47 Transports. She was small enough to be able to stand in the nose cone to complete the assembly process there. She continues to work through the years, first with Proctor Silex and retiring from Fredericks in Pennsylvania, where she assembled space craft components. Betty also loved poetry and often wrote a short poem in birthday cards. She and Ray moved to Massachusetts several years ago at the urging of her sister, Doris and other family members. They settled in the Wachusett area for their remaining years. She and Ray lived at the Colony Retirement Community in Holden for several years, where they quickly became friends with many of the residents.
Her beloved husband, Ray J. Wartman died in 2015. She leave her son, Ray F. Wartman of South Carolina and Holden; her grandson, Jack Bravo of Holden; her granddaughter, Heather Kromer of Northampton, PA; a great granddaughter, Amber Rose Kromer; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother, Harold Galbraith of Pennsylvania and sister, Doris Hart of Massachusetts.
A memorial service will be held in Massachusetts at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Notre Dame Hospice
