Bette L (Johnson) Gowing

August 22, 1925 — April 2, 2014

HOLDEN/FLAGLER BEACH, FL – Bette L. (Johnson) Gowing, 88, passed away April 2, 2014, in Florida after an illness. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of George A. and Elsa G. M. (Swenson) Johnson and had lived in Holden for many years before moving to Florida in 1990.



She leaves her loving husband of 65 years, Robert N. Gowing; two sons, John Gowing and his wife, Shu of Melbourne, FL; Scott Gowing and his wife, Susan of North Potomac, MD; and two granddaughters, Sarah and Dana Gowing.



Bette graduated from North High School in 1943 and Nasson College in Springvale, ME in 1945. She was an associate librarian at the Gale Free Library in Holden for many years, retiring in 1990. Previously, she worked as a dietician in Bridgeport, CT, preparing special diets for hospital patients. She was also the cafeteria manager at the Worcester YMCA. As an active member of the First Congregational Church of Holden, she participated in various ministries and performed frequently as a choir soloist. Bette was an avid reader while raising her family. In Flagler Beach, she continued her love for reading and was recognized by the community for her volunteer work in local children’s reading programs. She enjoyed playing bridge and spending time with family and friends.



There will be a private memorial service in Florida. A private interment service will be held at a later date at Grove Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Flagler Beach United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 929, Flagler Beach, FL 32136. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
