Biography
WORCESTER - Bessie Savatsky, age 101, died on Monday, January 4, 2016 in the Jewish Healthcare Center, Worcester. She was born in Worcester on March 24, 1914, and was the youngest of five children of Odis and Aaron Savatsky.
Bess completed a four year college degree in 1935 at Worcester State Teacher's College. Her first job, however, was the designing of supermarket ads for publication. It was interesting and creative work, and she did not become a grammar school teacher until she was much older. She taught in the Sterling, MA school system for 20 years.
Throughout her life, Bess was multi-faceted. She traveled extensively and shared interesting stories with her close family. Bess gave back to the community in many ways. She translated books into Braille to help the blind. She was a member and an active volunteer at Temple Emanuel Sinai.
After retiring from the school system, Bess spent her winters in Florida. She enjoyed the activities and of course, the warm weather.
Bess is a very kind and nurturing person and was very close to her two sisters. This was most evident when one sister required 24-hour care and she arranged and supervised everything. Bess has lived a very long life, and has been very fortunate to have received such wonderful care in her later years at the Jewish Healthcare Center.
She is survived by three nieces, Janice Shaer of Chestnut Ridge, NY, Connie Kreshtool of Wilmington, DE and Joan Milfred of Issaquah, WA; two nephews, Alan Savat of Santa Cruz, CA and Morton Fine of Hartford, CT; and locally in Worcester, a grandnephew, Gary Wolf.
