Bessie (Kontaxi) Christo

WORCESTER – Bessie (Kontaxi) Christo, 92, a resident at Illyrian Gardens in Worcester, passed away peacefully in the presence of her loving family on Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at St. Vincent Hospital. Born in Worcester on December 2, 1921, Bessie was the daughter of Albanian immigrants, George and Katina (Chapi) Kontaxi.

Bessie graduated from Commerce High School in 1941. Following her graduation, she met and married Vasil “Bill” Christo and shared 46 years of marriage. They moved to Albany, New York for a time before returning to Worcester and then West Boylston where they raised their three children. In 1955, Bessie and her husband purchased Louis Spa on Millbury Street and later the Ivy Kitchen on Waldo Street both in Worcester.

She was a member of Saint Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church in Worcester and was a longtime volunteer and senior companion at Christopher Heights until last October, where she loved helping “old” people. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend, and will be remembered for her gentle and kind, thoughtful and loving nature. Bessie loved being at family gatherings, sharing time and words of wisdom with her family.

Her husband, Vasil “Bill” Christo died in 1986. She leaves her daughter, Marsha N. Brinck of Worcester; two sons, Dennis V. Christo and his wife, Dorothy of West Boylston and Paul V. Christo and his wife, Rosanne of Summerville, SC; her sister, Helen Harry of Worcester; 9 grandchildren, Kimberly, Stephanie, Gregory, Stephen, Denise, Carol Anne, Jodi, Brian and Erin; 16 great-grandchildren, Donna, Kylie, Ryan, Shawn, Cheyanne, Nina, Sophia, Abigail, Ryan, McKenzie, Alyssa, Sarah, Jessica, Emma, Olivia, Ivy and Reed; a great-great-grandson, Aiden. Besides her husband and parents, Bessie is predeceased by her brother, John Kontaxi.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather and visit with Bessie’s family from 2 to 5 p.m., at which time a Trisagion Prayer Service will be held on Sunday, March 23, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling and again Monday morning, March 24, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury St., Worcester, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Bessie will be laid to rest next to her husband at Hope Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bessie’s name to Saint Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609.
