RUTLAND – Bernard W. Thorsen, 87, passed away unexpectedly at home on Saturday, January 4, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Oscar and Johanna (Janowski) Thorsen and had lived in Rutland since 1970.
Bernard proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After serving for two years, he return to continue his education before reenlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1956. Following the service, Bernard went to work with the U. S. Weather Bureau in Worcester as an electronic technician before retiring in 1987. In his leisure, he enjoyed reading and writing.
Bernard leaves his loving wife, Carol L. (Burke) Thorsen; two sons, Jeffrey Thorsen of Winchendon and Gregory Thorsen of Princeton; his daughter, Vivian Thorsen of Vermont; two grandchildren, Alex and Aimee Thorsen; and nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15th at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
