Barbara J. (Roberts) Mckeon

November 25, 1929 — February 27, 2014

WORCESTER – Barbara J. (Roberts) McKeon, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, February 27, 2014, at Beaumont Worcester surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Lester A. and Angelina V. (Morrill) Roberts.



Mrs. McKeon was educated at Woodland Preparatory School and graduated in 3.5 years from South High School. Barbara earned her business degree from Becker College in 1952.



Barbara held several jobs including positions with Melville Shoe Company and The Ivy Shop. In 1969 Barbara began her professional career at The Worcester Municipal Airport as a clerk typist. After taking the civil service exam, she became a senior clerk, principal clerk and for the last 10 years she was an administrative assistant. After 20 years of service to the City of Worcester and forming many lifelong friendships along the way, she retired in 1989.



Barbara was the first woman to earn the Thomas S. Green Award in 1988, given by the Worcester Municipal Research Bureau for providing outstanding service to the city of Worcester. From 1982-1985 Barbara was the Secretary Treasurer to the Massachusetts Airport Management Association (MAMA). In 1985, Barbara served as President of the Worcester Business and Professional Woman’s Club after serving as Treasurer, Secretary and Vice President.



Her beloved husband of 50 years, Richard D. McKeon, passed away in 2002. She leaves her sons, Richard D. McKeon and his wife, Cheryl of Sturbridge and Scott M. McKeon of North Oxford; her precious grandchildren, Jessica, Kristen, Erin, ,Geoffrey, Kelly, Nicole, Dane, Brian and Grant; her great-grandchildren, Kayla, Braiden, McKenzie, Camden and Ella; her brothers, George Roberts of Vero Beach, FL, Paul Roberts and his wife, Anne of Paxton and Brother Raymond Roberts O.C.S.O., a Trappist Monk at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice Murphy and Betty Oatley. She was predeceased by her daughter, Gayle A. Fitzgerald in 2007 and infant daughter, Mary Ann in 1954.



While Barbara enjoyed traveling across the country and cruising to Alaska, South America, Europe and the Caribbean she would often remark that nothing gave her more joy then spending time with her family and friends.



Barbara will be lovingly remembered for her gentle nature, kind and loving spirit and most of all her infectious laugh.



Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, March 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service will be held from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 4, at Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant St., Worcester, followed by interment at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton.
