Barbara (Menard) Murphy

August 22, 1929 — December 29, 2013

STERLING/CONCORD – Barbara (Menard) Murphy, 84, passed away peacefully under the loving care of her family on Sunday, December 29, 2013, after a lengthy illness with Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, Barbara was the daughter of Raymond and Dorothy (Pershake) Menard and was raised in Fall River.

Barbara graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Fall River and Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. After graduating college, she enlisted in the United States Navy where she honorably served her country for four years during the Korean Conflict. She was a gifted designer, and upon returning home, she moved to Newton and went immediately to work as a draftsman at AMF (American Machine and Foundry) in the Boston area where she worked for several years. She later moved to Concord where she raised her three children. Barbara enjoyed her retirement in Sterling.

Barbara was also a gifted artist and was known for her oil, watercolor and pencil drawings. She had a genuine thirst for knowledge and looked forward to reading when ever she had a chance. She was a kind, nurturing and devoted mother and was proud of her children’s many accomplishments.

She is survived and will be greatly missed by her three children, Jacqueline R. Coombs of Worcester, Joshua B. Murphy and his wife Judy of Leominster and Adam S. Murphy of Bradenton, Florida; and two grandchildren, Army Sgt. Mark Alexander Coombs who is presently deployed in Afghanistan, and Jennifer L. Murphy.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Barbara’s family from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 3, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling, followed by a funeral service celebrating her life at 7 p.m. Interment will be held privately at the Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
