STERLING – Barbara L. (Collins) Stuart Hasselmann, 97, of Clinton Road, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester. She was born on Pope’s Island, the daughter of Ira R. and Edna M. (Wood) Collins and lived most of her life in Sterling.
She studied at Atlantic Union College and married Paul Stuart of Sterling in 1937. After Paul’s death, she remarried and was predeceased by her second husband, Francis “Bud” Hasselmann of Clinton. Barbara worked for many years at the Sterling Cider Mill before joining the Clipper Division of the Norton Co. in Worcester, retiring in1979. She worshipped at the Sterling Seventh-Day Adventist Church, where she was a founding member and pianist.
Barbara is survived by her son, Clark Stuart and his wife, Joan of Surprise, AZ; her daughters, Linda and her husband, Roger Payette of Sterling and Cheryl and her husband, James Keith of Sterling; her sons, Samuel Stuart and his wife, Marie of Vernon, CT and Timothy Stuart and his wife, Tamara of Sterling with whom she made her home for 26 years; her dear sister, Alice, wife of Burnell Carney of Syracuse, NY; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who all counted her as a second mother and will miss her quick smile and kind heart. She was predeceased by three brothers, Irven, Paul and Victor Collins and two sisters, Trudy Keslake and Miriam Sievers.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, at the Miles Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., (Rte. 12) Sterling. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 15, at the Sterling Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Rte. 12, Sterling, MA. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, Clinton Rd., (Rte. 62), Sterling, MA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sterling Animal Shelter, 17 Laurelwood Rd., Sterling, MA 01564 or to the Town of Sterling Fire Dept., Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564 or to a charity of one’s own choice.
