Biography

GREENFIELD/ORANGE – Avery R. (Goldman) Plotkin, 93, passed away peacefully after a brief illness in the presence of her loving family on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. Born and raised in Worcester, Avery was the daughter of Daniel and Rachel (Ellowitz) Goldman and lived the last 17 years at the Mill House in Greenfield.

Avery was a 1940 graduate of Commerce High School in Worcester. With a talent and interest in commercial art, she attended The Vesper George School of Art in Boston. In 1945, Avery was introduced on a blind date to Charles Plotkin, who had just returned home after serving in the United States Army during World War II. It was love at first sight and within the year they were married. Avery and Charlie moved to the Athol area shortly after their marriage and raised their four daughters in Orange where they resided for over 50 years.

In the early 1960s, Avery ventured into the work place and began her 30 year career in insurance at the Robert Plotkin and James D. Kimball Insurance Agencies. Avery had a lifetime of devoted community service. She was an active member of Temple Israel in Athol, including the affiliated Hadassah chapter. In the Orange/Athol area she was the president of both the Ladies Aid Society and the Quota Club. After moving to Greenfield in 1999, Avery joined Temple Israel, volunteered at Baystate Franklin Medical Center, served as a board member on the Greenfield Council on Aging, and was president of the Mill House Activities Association. She was an avid teacher and student of Mahjong, and was an integral part of the Greenfield and Montague Senior Centers.

Her transcendent beauty and engaging personality brought out the best in everyone she met. Avery was known for the kindness she showed to all.  She was an extraordinary, vibrant and resilient woman. She will be missed by those who were fortunate to have known her and will be remembered as a caring and loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Her beloved husband of 54 years, Charles H. Plotkin, died in 2000. She leaves her loving daughters, Bonnie (Alexis) G. Meister and her husband Richard of Asheville, North Carolina, Elaine J. Dove of Longmeadow, Debra J. Lanou and her husband Stephen of Northfield, and Carol S.
