HOLDEN – Viola A. (Sobol) Griffin, 98, formerly of Jefferson, passed away on Friday, February 4, 2011, surrounded by her loving family in the Knollwood Nursing Center, West Boylston. Her husband of 40 years, Peter F. Griffin, died in 1977.
She is survived by her son, Peter A. Griffin and his wife Karen of Jefferson; two daughters, Frances M. Glockner and her husband Alfred of Holden and Mary Ellen Putnam and her husband Gary of Jefferson; a brother, Anthony J. Sobol of Bolton, CT; a sister, Sophie M. Sobol of Jefferson; 8 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Viola was born in Sutton, daughter of Anthony and Mary (Certowicz) Sobol. She was a graduate of Holden High School and earned an Associate's degree from Becker Junior College in Worcester. For many years, she was a pharmacy associate at the former Apple Drug Store in Holden, retiring at the age of 75. Previously she worked at Holden Hospital. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, traveling the world with her family and being a mother and homemaker. She was a long time member of St. Mary's Church in Jefferson.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Knollwood Nursing Center for their kind and caring support during this time. Last Friday, Viola even won the "wii bowling" championship at Knollwood!
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 6th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Her funeral will be held on Monday, February 7th, from the funeral home, with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster Street, Worcester. The family suggests memorial donations may be made to the Knollwood Nursing Center Employee Fund, 87 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA 01606.
