Arthur Willard French

January 20, 1926 — June 3, 2004

STERLING – Arthur Willard French, 78, of Sterling passed away in his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 3, 2004, after a battle with cancer.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, Dorothy (Crathern) French; children Willard K., James M., Penelope A. Sabourin and Melissa M. French, all of Sterling; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandsons, Lincoln Willard and Samuel Arthur. He also leaves a sister, Elizabeth Greeley. Two sisters, Carolyn Cameron and Dorothy Kelleher predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, MA, son of Willard K. and Louise G. (Morse). He graduated from Classical High School and served in the Army from 1944 – 1946 in the European Theater. He then attended Farragut College in Idaho and graduated from Wentworth Institute in 1950.

Arthur worked for Worcester Federal Savings and Loan Assoc. for 33 years and was named Vice President of Support Services. He was a Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser and a member of the Appraisal Institute. He owned A.W. French and Associates. He was the third generation caretaker of Sagatabscot Apple Orchard in Sterling. Arthur was also an avid aviator and part owner of the Sterling Airport. He owned several antique cars which he enjoyed restoring. He was a member of the Central Mass Model T Club, Worcester County Model A Club, the Down East Model T Club, and the Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway Museum. Arthur and his wife enjoyed extensive world travel and time at their beautiful lake cottage in Maine with their family and friends.

Arthur served on the Sterling Board of Appeals for 40 years and served on several building committees for the Town of Sterling. He was on an advisory board of the Massachusetts School Counselors Association. He was a member of the Morning Star Lodge AF & AM. Arthur was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the First Church of Sterling and served on the Board of Deacons and taught Sunday school for 20 years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, at the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road. Calling hours are from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Arthur’s name to Angel Flight Northeast, Lawrence Municipal Airport, 492 Sutton St., North Andover, MA 01845; or to First Church of Sterling, Memorial Fund, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, P.O. Box 40, Sterling, MA 01564.
