Arthur S. Palmer

November 25, 1920 — May 27, 2014

PAXTON - Arthur S. Palmer, Jr., 93, a longtime Paxton resident, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Arthur was born and raised in Worcester, a son of the late Gladys (Gould) and Arthur S. Palmer, Sr.

He graduated from Commerce High School, Worcester. Prior to leaving for his military service, Arthur married his beloved, the former Lillian G. Garber. He was a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army Air Corps as a B-17 bomber pilot, piloting 35 missions over the European theater. After the war, Arthur and his wife began raising their family in Holden, then following the tornado in 1953, the family moved to Paxton where they lived for more than 60 years. Together, they celebrated 69 years of marriage before Lillian passed away in 2012.

Arthur worked as an underwriter for the former Paul Revere Insurance Company, Worcester for more than 40 years. During their retirement years, Arthur and Lillian travelled extensively around the United States, including both coasts and Hawaii. He attended many Air Corps unit reunion gatherings during this time. A true lover of the ocean, their home in Rye, New Hampshire brought so much joy to them both. Arthur was an enthusiastic gardener, known for his tomatoes and corn. Arthur loved to dance, enjoyed big band and jazz music, and enjoyed trout fishing. He also loved the many Irish Setters that shared their home through the years.

He leaves his three children, Richard G. Palmer, Susan Martin and her husband, John and Catherine L. Palmer, all of Paxton; his sister, Joan Noel of Boylston; three grandchildren, Tracey Chasmine of Spencer, Jeffrey P. Cooney of Worcester, and Christopher J. Martin of Leominster; his five great-grandchildren, Timothy, Taylor and Kestra Cooney, Ashlee Wolanski, and David Hollup; and a great-great-granddaughter, Lucy S. Wolanski; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Madeline Cherris and Elizabeth Palmer.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Arthur’s family on Friday, May 30, from 5-7 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Mooreland Cemetery, Paxton.
