STERLING – Arthur J. Coughlin, Sr., 83, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, March 13, 2014 after an illness. He was born in Worcester, the son of Francis P. and Hazel A. (Young) Coughlin and had lived in Sterling most of his life.
He leaves his loving wife of 14 years, Florence (Jones) Noponen Coughlin; two sons, Michael R. Coughlin and Arthur J. Coughlin, Jr., both of Sterling; a step-daughter, Christine K. Arsenault of Sterling; a step-son, David A. Noponen of Naples, Florida; a brother, Charles H. Coughlin and his wife, Concetta of West Boylston; five grandchildren, Kari, Kristopher, Michael, John and Liam Coughlin; three step-grandchildren, Alex and Evan Noponen and Benjamin Strang; and a great-granddaughter, Kali Coughlin. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth (Stanley) Coughlin, and a brother, Francis P. Coughlin, Jr.
Arthur went to work for Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut before enlisting in the service in 1951. He was a senior aircraft mechanic for the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After serving his country he went to work for LaPointe Machine Tool Company in Hudson for 14 years and later worked at Morgan Construction in Worcester until he retired in 1991. Arthur was a member of the First Church in Sterling, the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189, the Sterling Historical Society, Sterling Cable Board, Chocksett Club and was a former member of the Sterling Light Board. He was a railroad and motorcycle enthusiast and loved to work in his machine shop at home.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. The funeral for Arthur will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 17, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling, MA 01564. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Church in Sterling, or to the VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
