STERLING – Arnold K. Blanchard, Jr., 95, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 after a short illness. He was born in Portsmouth, NH, the son of Arnold “Pappy” K., Sr. and Agnes (Brindley) Blanchard and graduated from Athol High School 1937. He lived in West Hartford and then to Southington, CT, for over 30 years and recently moved to Sterling to be near his family.
Arnold served with the Merchant Marine during World War II and later was employed at L.S. Starrett Company in Athol. The Blanchard’s owned Blanchard Bros. Jenny Station and then Blanchard Bros. Gulf Station in Athol. He worked for Pratt & Whitney in 1964 and then for the U.S. Postal service in the Hartford area until his retirement. He was an avid bowler, gardener and loved to spend time with his family and friends.
His loving wife of 44 years, Jeannette L. (Lessard) Blanchard, passed away in 1997. He leaves 12 nieces; 5 nephews; and many grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Fred Blanchard and a sister, Jean Blanchard.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct 17, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. Funeral services for Arnold will be held from the funeral home on Saturday, Oct. 18, with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Immaculate Conception Church, 809 Main Street, Lancaster. A private committal service will be held at Grove Hill Cemetery in Vernon, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
