RUTLAND - Anthony L. Miller passed away on June 14 at the West Roxbury VA Hospital after an illness. He was 72 years old. Proudly born in Lewiston Montana, Tony was the son of the late Homer and Rita (Loebach) Miller. As the son of an Air Force officer, Tony moved constantly in his youth. He started school in Japan and graduated from Damien High School in Honolulu Hawaii.
Tony honorably served with the 101st Airborne Division in both Vietnam and Thailand from 1968 – 1971. After returning, he used his GI bill to earn his degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern Maine. He then spent 40 years in Data Communications, retiring as the SVP of Data Communications at Putnam Investments. He was a longtime member, and former President, of the Rutland Sportsman’s Club.
His larger-than-life personality and great big laugh will be missed by all who knew him. He had a love of languages, traveling, and making those around him belly laugh (with or at him). We are petitioning to have his barstool at the club retired, his ‘Tonyisms’ copywritten, and his Montana state flag displayed in the Smithsonian.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Susan F. (Fanning) Miller; his three children, Nicholas A. Miller of Nashville, TN, Becky L. Lindquist of Barre and Melissa J. Fitzgerald of Uxbridge; two brothers, Michael Miller of Alabama and Thomas Miller of Oak Park, VA; a sister, Karleen Garland of New Port Richey, FL; the apples of his eye, his three grandchildren, Isabel Lindquist, Allison Lindquist and Madelyn Fitzgerald, and 3 longtime friends from his time with the Army, John Fanning, William Rowles and Martin Boisvert.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Tony’s family from 1-3 PM on Saturday, June 19 at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Worcester County Food Bank, 474 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.
