WEST BOYLSTON – Andrew "Andy" E. Shusta, Sr., 94, of Briarwood Circle, Worcester, formerly of West Boylston, died peacefully after an illness on Monday, April 26, 2010 in Knollwood Nursing Center, West Boylston.
He leaves his wife of 67 years, Dorothy M. (Follansbee) Shusta; five children, Joan C. Harvey and her husband William of Winter Park, Florida, Andrea J. Albert and her husband Thomas of North Augusta, South Carolina, John A. Shusta and his wife Mary Lee of Princeton, Judith E. Inch and her husband Timothy of Boulder City, Nevada and Andrew E. Shusta, Jr. and his wife Lynda of West Boylston; a brother, Michael Shusta of Clinton; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by two sisters, Annie Shusta of Maine and Mary Zytkiewicz of Clinton.
Andy was born in Madison, Maine, a son of Michael and Maria (Bonga) Shusta. He was raised in Clinton and resided in West Boylston from 1956 until 2009 when he moved to the Briarwood Retirement Community in Worcester. A West Boylston resident for 54 years, Andy attended Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Pharmacist's Mate on LST 534 and LST 350, participating in D-Day operations at Normandy, and later in the Pacific. A 60-year member of the Carpenters' Union, he served as Business Agent of Local 107 for 27 years. He helped initiate the Massachusetts Carpenters' Pension Fund, and Health and Welfare Fund, serving as trustee. He assisted in the formation of the Carpenters' Apprenticeship Program, especially in developing qualified journeyman carpenters.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28th, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral for Andy will be held on Thursday, April 29th, from the funeral home with an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, West Boylston. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, West Boylston.
