Anastasia S. (Goudelias) Smith

October 25, 1919 — April 9, 2017

RUTLAND/STERLING - Anastasia S. "Sue" (Goudelias) Smith, 97, died peacefully at home, under the care of her loving family on Sunday, April 9, 2017.  Sue was born in New York City, the daughter of Mary (Varsami) and John Goudelias.                 She was predeceased by her husband of over 52 years, Lewis M. Smith Jr. in 2004.  Sue is survived by her daughters; Leslie Bordonaro and her husband, Frank of Boston and Karen Soderberg and her husband, Robert of Rutland; her treasured grandchildren; Carl Soderberg and his wife, Betsy of Princeton, Eric Soderberg and his wife, Kristie of Yarmouth, Ian Soderberg and his wife, Lexi of Chatham and Haley Soderberg of Shrewsbury; five beloved great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.               Sue graduated from Washington Irving High School in Brooklyn, NY, that specialized in graphic arts. She also attended courses at Anatolia College (American College) in Thessalonika, Greece, New York University and Central New England College. During WWII Sue began working as a draftsman and a loftsman designing and manufacturing aircraft for Republic Aviation on Long Island, NY.  She later worked as a draftsman for the Worcester Controls Co., formerly located in West Boylston, retiring in 1985.                 Sue and her husband, Lewis, had lived in Sterling from 1959 to 1985. Sue had been an active member of the First Church in Sterling. She and Lew then moved to Florida, MA. Sue moved to Rutland in 2008 to live with Karen and Bob.  She was a gifted artist and her talent is evident in the cherished paintings, sculptures, clothing, and jewelry she created.  Sue loved her family and truly enjoyed being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.                Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.  Burial will be private.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Sterling Animal Shelter, 17 Laurelwood Rd., Sterling, MA 01564.  To share a memory or offer an online condolence visit our "Guest Book" here on this page.
