WORCESTER – William A. Mitchell, Jr., 88, of 18 Lanesboro Road, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, March 9, 2007, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 63 years, Catherine V. (Tod) Mitchell; two sons, William A. Mitchell and his wife Linda of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Thomas F. Mitchell and his wife Jennifer of Worcester; two daughters, Jane M. Nitti and her husband Anthony of Morgantown, PA, and Catherine J. Chouinard and her husband Michael of South Grafton; a brother, Lee Mitchell of Missouri; a sister, Maria Lovelace of Fulton, New York; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; many nephews and nieces. Two brothers, Edward and Leland Mitchell, and three sisters, Elainie Wilcox, Florence Taylor and Lorraine Pettus, predeceased him. He was born in Oswego, New York, son of William A. and Edna (Hopkins) Mitchell, Sr., and lived in Fulton, New York before moving to Worcester in 1954. He was a graduate of Fulton High School and attended Syracuse University.
Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of World War II, Army Air Corps 11th Airborne Division, in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was a draftsman and engineer for the Water Department, City of Worcester for 10 years, retiring in 1991, and was a member of St. Christopher’s Church. A prominent Irish tenor, he performed with the Worcester Men of Song, Worcester Light Opera Club, Worcester Chorus and performed throughout New England.
The funeral for Mr. Mitchell will be held on Wednesday, March 14, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher’s Church, 950 West Boylston Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester. Family and friends are invited to calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, in the funeral home.
