Amelia ''Millie'' (Delbene) Richard

August 12, 1939 — October 19, 2006

STERLING – Amelia “Millie” (DelBene) Richard. A loving and grateful family joins countless others whose lives she touched to mourn the passing of Millie Richard. Surrounded by those she loved, Millie’s battle with cancer came to an end at UMass Memorial Hospital on October 19, 2006. She was 67.

She was born on August 12, 1939 in Cambridge, the daughter of Bernadino DelBene and Catherine (Anastasi) DelBene. Millie graduated from Medford High School in 1958 and soon after met the man she called the love of her life, Karl H. Richard. Throughout their over 40 years of marriage, Millie shared with Karl, an executive chef, a love of the culinary arts. They owned and operated the Wall Street Deli in West Boylston, where their many customers grew to be dear friends. Joined by their daughters April and January, the Deli was more than a family business, providing good food and warm hospitality to local residents for 17 years.

Known for her signature Italian cookie trays and the hundreds of pies baked during the holidays, Millie loved sharing her talents with those in the community. The supreme hostess, visitors were always welcomed with a place at her table and a home cooked meal.

A warm and generous spirit, Millie was also a genuine character. Her straight-from-the-heart-Italian-mother approach to life was disarming and wickedly delightful. Millie’s lasting legacy is that she cared. For 9 years, Millie provided unstinting love and care to her husband, a stroke victim at the age of 55, until his death in 2002. She cared deeply for her daughters and grandchildren and dedicated herself to being a part of their lives every day. But Millie cared about everyone she met. A family member recalls, “Millie knew not just the postman and the store clerk but their families too.” Anyone who had the privilege of meeting Millie knows what it felt like to be on the receiving end of her sincere interest and compassion.

One of five siblings, Millie is pre-deceased by her brother, Freddie DelBene of Medford; and survived by siblings, Paula Turco of Tewksbury, James DelBene of Medford and Anna Blonde of Marshfield. The mother of three children, she is pre-deceased by her son, Clayton Richard; and survived by two daughters, April Richard of Sterling and January Ramstrom of Holden; and her cherished grandchildren, Catherine Castagnaro and River Ramstrom.

The funeral service for Millie will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, October 23, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. Calling hours are 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling.

Millie’s amazing gift was that she had enough love for everyone and gave it so freely. The lives of so many are diminished by her passing. “Mama Millie” remains in the hearts of those who loved her, an unwavering touchstone and the very definition of ‘home’.
