SHREWSBURY/HOLDEN – Mary A. (Mahoney) D’Amato, 77, of 30 Julio Dr., formerly of Holden, died on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 in Saint Vincent Hospital after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 53, Dr. Henry E. D’Amato; a son, John P. D’Amato of Hermosa Beach, California; two daughters, Maryann D. Wood and her husband Ian of Holden and Susan E. Paadre and her husband Heikki of Sutton; a brother, Dr. John Mahoney of Sarasota, Florida; a sister, Ann Coleman of Bakersfield, California; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and Kristen Paadre, and David and Stephen Wood. Her son, Francis X. D’Amato died in 1994. She was born in Jacksonville, Florida, the daughter of John J. and Bessie Ann (Page) Mahoney and lived many years in Holden before recently moving to Southgate in Shrewsbury.
Mary received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Economics from Regis College in 1950 and her Masters of Arts in Teaching from Assumption College in 1967. Mary became involved in religious education as a teacher at St. Mary’s Church, Jefferson in 1960 and became the Director of Religious Education in the parish in 1970. She was the Associate Director and Consultant in Religious Education for the Diocese of Worcester from 1977 to 1991. In 1986, she received the Mother Seton Award for her contributions to religious education in the diocesan schools in Worcester. Upon her retirement in 1991, she received a special citation for her many contributions to parish religious education programs.
Mary was an avid reader who enjoyed gardening and the fine arts. She loved any kind of social gathering with her many friends, and was a member of the Resident’s Council at Southgate. Her ever-present smile was infectious and, at the end of her life, became inspiring.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 30, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral for Mrs. D’Amato will be held on Saturday, March 31, from the funeral home with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson.
