Alyce S. (Mosteiko) Sweeney

August 12, 1920 — February 10, 2014

RUTLAND – Alyce S. (Mosteiko) Sweeney, 93, passed away at home on Monday, February 10, 2014 after an illness. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Rutland, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Brauman) Mosteiko. She graduated from Rutland High School and Leominster Hospital School of Nursing.

She leaves her loving husband of 70 years, Kenneth J. Sweeney, Sr.; a son, Kenneth J. Sweeney, Jr. and his wife, Linda J. (Kennedy) of Rutland; a daughter, Linda D. Sweeney and her husband, Peter of Rutland; two grandchildren, Timothy and Ryan; and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by four sisters, Pauline Fletcher, Dorothy McCarthy, Elizabeth Koski and Vera Ruchala.

Alyce was a surgical nurse at the VA Hospital in Rutland for 20 years until it closed and then worked at the VA Hospital in West Roxbury until she retired from the government. She continued her career and went to work at Harrington Hospital in Southbridge for 10 years until she retired in 1982. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, the Altar Society and was a volunteer on the bereavement committee. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, crafts and gardening.

Alyce’s family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation for the care and compassion provided by Diane Sorensen, her personal caregiver the past 3 ½ years and the staff of the Jewish Healthcare and Hospice Center, especially Aida Price

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour on Friday, Feb. 14, from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden followed by a 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street, Rutland, MA 01542. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Church, P.O.
