S Grace Alma (Rangnow) Gray

HOLDEN – Grace Alma (Rangnow) Gray, 93, of Donald Ave., died on Monday, June 20, 2011 in UMass Memorial Healthcare-University Campus, Worcester.

Her husband, James C. Gray died in 1991 before their 50th wedding anniversary. She is survived by her son, the Rev. Stephen C. Gray and his wife Lennie (Clark) of Indianapolis, IN; a brother, William Rangnow of Chatham; a sister, Claire Rangnow of Worcester; her two grandchildren, Andrew and Stephanie Gray. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of Adolph H. and Carolyn T. (Hasenfus) Rangnow.

Mrs. Gray graduated from Newton High School in 1935 and in 1937 she graduated from Bryant College in Providence, RI. She married her husband, James C. Gray on December 15, 1941, 8 days after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. They were one of the first "war couples" married in the Boston area. Shortly after the wedding Mr. Gray left to serve in the U.S. Army in the European theatre of WWII. Mrs. Gray worked as a legal secretary in Providence, RI and Boston. While working in Providence she survived the great hurricane of 1938 which devastated much of the city.

Mrs. Gray has lived in Holden for the past 57 years. She was President of the Holden Hospital Women's Auxiliary and attended the Worcester Center for Crafts for 37 years. She was a devoted member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Holden, and served as Deacon there for three terms and was Chair of the Memorial Gift committee. Mrs. Grace volunteered in the "Corner Shop" at the church as well as the church office. For several years she was instrumental in organizing the church "Holden Days" sale, and helped with the church "Mustard Seed" dinners. Mrs. Gray will be deeply missed by all who were touched by her loving and charitable spirit.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 25th in the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Holden. The Rev. John Barber will officiate. Private burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Endowment Fund, 1180 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is assisting the family with arrangements.
