Alice P. (Palmer) Gross

August 24, 1936 — May 21, 2014

HOLDEN – Alice P. (Palmer) Gross, 77, of Jefferson died at home with her husband by her side on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, after courageously waging a 17-year battle against cancer. Born in Glens Falls, New York, Alice was the daughter of Kenneth F. and Agnes B. (Beakbane) Palmer, and moved from Florissant, Missouri to Holden in 1969.

She attended Plattsburg State Teacher’s College in Plattsburgh, NY, and worked as a screener for 16 years at ECC Corp in Jefferson. Trained as an EMT, she served as “nurse” for the employees. Later, she spent two years as a receptionist at the Holden Town Hall, and then taught water-walking classes for 12 years at the Greendale YMCA.

Alice was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden, sang in its choir, played in its handbell choir, and was a past member of the local Sweet Adelines Barbershop Harmony chapter. She also served 18 years as director of the First Congregational Church handbell choir in West Boylston. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, cooking skills, and enthusiastically enjoying Red Sox and Patriots’ games with her husband. Alice enjoyed caring for her three Holden granddaughters during their pre-school years while their parents worked.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 58 years, Kimball R. Gross; three sons, Stephen R. Gross and his wife, Lori of Holden, Ronald D. Gross and his wife, Patricia of Storrs, CT and David A. Gross and his wife, Kelly of Hebron, KY; seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Daniel, Christopher, Kelsey, Melissa, Sarah, and Jessica; and three great-grandchildren, Jack, Samantha, and Damian. Besides her parents, Alice is predeceased by her brother, Floyd Palmer.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A memorial service honoring Alice’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 29 at the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main Street. Burial will be held privately at Grove Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Alice’s name to the “Organ Restoration Fund” at the First Congregational Church, 1180 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
