HOLDEN - Alice (Skelton) Carr, 90, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at St. Vincent Hospital, Worcester. Alice was born in Meadville, PA, the daughter of Ray H. and Bessie (Kirk Wheeler) Skelton and lived in Holden for over 60 years.
She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Winthrop W. Carr in 1996. She is survived by her three loving daughters, Carolyn Ricardi of Holden, Katherine-Ann Vogel of Worcester and Christine Hague of Weare, NH; two adoring granddaughters, Kristen Sheehan and Emily Hague; and one great granddaughter, Erynn Sheehan. She was predeceased by her brothers, Ray H. Skelton II and Eugene W. Skelton.
Alice had a passion for education, particularly mathematics. She graduated from Smith College with the class of 1943 and later earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from W.P.I. Alice taught at the Bancroft School in Worcester for 32 years and served as Chairman of the Math Department. She was a founding member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Holden and actively served in ministry for many decades. She co-authored Memoirs of a Journey of Faith, an informal history of St. Francis Church (1948~2008).
A memorial service celebrating Alice’s life will be held on Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m., at Saint Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland St., Holden. Interment will follow in the Saint Francis Memorial Garden. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Francis Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 70 Highland St., Holden, MA 01520 or to the Bancroft School, Annual Fund, 110 Shore Dr., Worcester, MA 01605.
