S Nola Alfreda (Porter) Sturke

HOLDEN, MA / CONCORD, NH – Nola Alfreda (Porter) Sturke, 99, of Holden and Attleboro, died Thursday, March 18, 2010 in Concord Hospital, Concord, New Hampshire.

Her husband Ralph C. Sturke, died in 1982. She leaves her sons, Phillip K. Sturke and his wife Cynthia of Sterling, Virginia and Dr. Robert W. Sturke of Concord, NH; five grandchildren, Peter Sturke and Andrew Lacatell, both of Richmond, VA, Marc Lacatell of Newton, Rachel Sturke of Washington, D.C. and Alex Sturke of Boston; six great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. Two sisters, Addie Porter Wentworth and Lois Porter Drawbridge of Holden, and a brother, Herbert Porter of Mississippi, predeceased her. She was born on May 27, 1910 in Dudley, a daughter of Alfred E. and Julia Clayton (Estabrook) Porter, raised in Holden, lived in Attleboro and returned to Holden before moving to Concord six years ago.

Nola was a 1928 graduate of Holden High School and Worcester Teachers College. She was a life-long elementary school teacher having started her teaching career in 1930 at the Allen L. Joslin School in Oxford, then Chaffins School in Holden, the Harriet Beecher Stowe School in Andover, the School Number One in Salem, NH, and at the Pleasant Street School and the Newman Avenue School, both in Seekonk. She retired in 1976. In 1975, she was selected as one of the most outstanding Elementary School Teachers of America. She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She enjoyed genealogy where her efforts are valued today by her family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, followed by a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. in the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Holden. Memorial donations may be made to the Gale Free Library, 23 Highland Street, Holden, MA 01520.
