WORCESTER -- Alfred D. Fleming, 88, formerly of Goldthwaite Road and Holden died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Friday, September 24, 2004, in the Christopher House after an illness.
His wife, I. Margaret (Rydstrom) Fleming, died in 1989. He leaves a son, Kenneth W. Fleming of Pompano Beach, Florida; two daughters, Lynda C. Abusamra and Sandra K. Grondahl both of Worcester; a sister, Katherine Leeuw of Indianapolis, Indiana; ten grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. His first wife, Evelyn (Goranson) Fleming, died in 1967. A sister, Alba Leeuw, and two brothers, Oscar L. and Eugene Fleming, pre-deceased him. He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, son of Oscar L. and Louise (Gibson) Fleming, and lived many years in Worcester and 24 years in Holden.
Mr. Fleming graduated from Worcester Junior College, and worked at Norton Company for 35 years, retiring in 1974 as a Production Foreman. He was a long time member, vestryman and lay reader of St. Michael’s on the Heights Episcopal Church in Worcester. Mr. Fleming was a 33rd Degree Mason and was a member of and Past Master of Athelstan Lodge of Masons in Worcester, now Guiding Lights Masonic Lodge of Masons in Auburn. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester including Goddard Council Prince of Jerusalem, Worcester Lodge of Perfection and Most Wise Master of Lawrence Chapter, Rose Croix. He was also a member and past Commander and Chief of the Connecticut Valley Consistory, Court 144 of the Royal Order of Jesters, Melha Temple Shrine in Springfield, and a Past President of the Hampshire Shrine Club.
The funeral service for Mr. Fleming will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 28, in St. Michael’s on the Heights Episcopal Church, 340 Burncoat Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster Street, Worcester. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, September 27, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The Guiding Lights Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic Ritual at 7 p.m. on Monday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner’s Burns Institute, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114; or St. Michael’s on the Heights Episcopal Church, 340 Burncoat Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
