WORCESTER – Alfons J. Smollin, 82, died Monday, August 30, 2004, in Worcester Medical Center, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, Doris M. (Burdick) Smollin; three sons, Mark S. Smollin and his wife Heidi K. of Sterling, Kurt J. Smollin and his wife Donna M. of Holden, Jonathan C. Smollin; and five grandchildren, Shauna, Jeffrey, Leandra, Kristina, and Julia Smollin. A brother, Albin J. Smollin, predeceased him. He was born, raised and lived in Worcester, son of Joseph and Josephine (Aksten) Smollin.
Mr. Smollin graduated St. Peter’s High School in Worcester where he was an outstanding baseball player. In 1941 he helped St. Peter’s win the city championship with a pitching record of 6 wins and no losses. He batted .407 and had the second most hits in the city. He was named to the T&G All City Team as a pitcher. He signed a professional baseball contract in 1946 with the Boston Braves, but arm trouble ended his career the same year. He remained an avid baseball enthusiast throughout his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the 163rd Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion in the South Pacific. He worked in Worcester his entire life, graduated Worcester Jr. College and was a member of St. George’s Church.
The funeral for Mr. Smollin will be held on Thursday, September 2, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, in the funeral home.
